HIGH ABILITY

 

     Since 1981, BCSC has been providing opportunities for high-ability learners.

According to Indiana Code, a high ability student is one who “performs at, or shows the potential for performing at, an outstanding level of accomplishment in at least one domain when compared to other students of the same age, experience, or environment; and is characterized by exceptional gifts, talents, motivation, or interests.” (IC 20-36-1-3)

 

High Ability Identification Testing Opportunities

The next opportunity to participate in High Ability Identification Testing will be November 2-13, 2026. All BCSC students in grade 3, as well as all students in grade 6 who have not previously been identifed as General Intellectual (High Abilty in both Math and ELA), will be tested at their home school during the testing window.
 
Students are allowed to retest one time as a 4th or 5th grade student and one time as a 7th or 8th grade student. Open testing will occur during the school day, at the student's home school, during the Nov. 2-13 testing window. 
 
Students in grades 4,5,7, or 8 who have not previously retested may register for Open Testing through a link which will be available on this site from September 29- October 16. 
 
Open testing for NonBCSC students will occur on November 4 and 5 at the Administration Building. More information about open testing and the link to register will be available through this website from September 29-October 16.
 
Identification results for students in grades 3-8 will be released in March of 2027.
 
All BCSC Kindergarten students will be screened for the potential for high ability in April, 2027. Parents of kindergarten students who are identified as having the potential for high ability will be notified in May, 2027.

High Ability Goals at BCSC

To develop K-12 students to apply higher-order thinking skills, increase depth of understanding, and pursue intellectual potential through high-quality instruction and rigorous curriculum within a Universally Designed Learning environment.  This is accomplished by:

  • Applying skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation
  • Engagement in developing solutions
  • Responding to open-ended questions and activities
  • Collaboration and group interaction
  • Experiencing a multi-disciplinary approach
  • Maximizing student choice
  • Developing expert learner qualities
  • Systematically identify students who demonstrate outstanding achievement or the potential ability to achieve in the academic areas of math and English/language arts.
  • Providing appropriate academic programming for students identified as high ability.
  • Continually revise and improve our high ability program through a systematic evaluation process.
  • Encourage broad-based community participation and support in the planning, implementation and evaluation of our program.
