BCSC PROCEDURES FOR STUDENT LUNCH/MEAL ACCOUNTS
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) requires school food authorities to establish written administrative guidelines and procedures for meal charges. Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) will adhere to the following meal charge procedure.
Debit System
All BCSC cafeterias utilize a pre-payment/debit system designed to process student purchases efficiently, confidentially, and reduce the amount of cash on hand at each site. The system operates on a pre-payment basis that allows students to deposit funds in advance of use. At the end of each school year, the account balance is transferred to the student’s account for the following year. Deposits may be made into student accounts by cash, online at MySchoolBucks.com with debit or credit cards for a nominal fee, or a personal check made payable to the school cafeteria. Please indicate your child’s name or student ID# on the check.
Charges
Due to the nature of the pre-payment /debit program, charging school meals is discouraged. Parents/Guardians may set up a free account with MySchoolBucks.com to monitor meal spending, view account purchase history, or set up alerts to notify if a student account balance is low. Automatic payments may also be set up to cover balances before a student runs short of money in their meal account. Significant negative account balances shall not be permitted. A significant negative account balance is any balance owed in excess of $20.00. If a student has a negative lunch account balance, she/he shall be provided a regular reimbursable meal that follows the USDA meal pattern, the cost of which shall not accrue to his/her negative lunch account. A student who has charged a meal may not charge or purchase a la carte items including an extra entrée. If a student repeatedly comes to school with no lunch money, food service employees must report this to the building principal. Notices will continue to be sent home until the balance is paid in full.
A meal account becomes inactive after 52 weeks with no deposits or withdrawals. An inactive lunch account that has a positive balance of $15 or less may be receipted back into the school meal fund where the School Meal Program funds are maintained. An inactive lunch account that has a nominal negative account balance of $15 or less may be offset against the positive balances in the fund; provided however that if the parent requests and can document entitlement to the positive balance in the account, the parent is entitled to a refund of that amount.
Meal Assistance
Meal assistance is available to all BCSC students who meet income qualifications. An application for meal assistance is given to each student at the start of the school year. Applications are also available for completion online on the BCSC Website. Students are considered paid status and will be charged full price meals until the meal assistance application has been processed and approved. Due to the large number of students attending BCSC Schools, it may be 10 days before applications are processed. A meal assistance form must be on file with the Food Service Department, processed, and approved before assistance prices take effect.
It is recommended each student start the school year with enough money in their meal account to cover two weeks of school. Meal assistance forms are effective for one school year. Forms must be from the current school year. Outdated forms will not be accepted. Families must reapply each school year for meal assistance if applicable. Please complete ONE application per household.
